STEM Cumbria Limited

The Big Bang is the largest celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths for young people in the UK. Everything they do is aimed at showing young people (primarily aged 7-19) just how many exciting and rewarding opportunities there are out there for them with the right experience and qualifications.

The Furness Big Bang is a local event organised on the principles of the national event. Over 1000 local children attended this event which aims to promote STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

Costain attended the event with a simple yet difficult challenge using LEGO bricks. The challenge was to build a 3ft tall LEGO tower using 172 bricks in three minutes or less. The challenge was designed for teams and was primarily focused on promoting team work. Less than 20% managed to complete the challenge. What was interesting was that primary students generally did better than the apprentices who took part!
